some close-ups

clockwise from front: two small cucumbers, leafy kale, swiss chard, black kale, swiss chard

a beet

the beets, turnips, and collard greens; in the middle--celery

the garden at the end of july...

the garden in early-june...

this is the way the garden looked when i left for my bike tour across can see collards, kale, chard, turnips, etc., coming up in the circles.....and tiny tomato and pepper plants on the right...

start of the garden 2009

at the behest of a former student, laura, who is my co-gardener this year, we redesigned with circles that sort of form the shape of the mathematics symbol for infinity...i like it. my previous garden design was haphazard and not really thought-out, just slapped together...inside the circles will be all sorts of greens and other vegetables. tomatoes/peppers will still dominate the garden, to the south of the sidewalk...

the farm....return from China 2007

tomato-loving squirrels!

so, if this weren't so cute, i might get upset.....squirrels gotta get some vitamin C somewhere...

ps. i harvest the tomatoes as soon as they start to show a little red--so they don't drop off and rot on the ground--and leave them in the sun on the back porch...usually, a fail-safe plan. ha ha!

garden 2007

just a few shots of the way the garden is shaping up early this summer....

four fruit trees!!!

a friend from college, jimmy, has been staying with me the last few weeks and wanted to do something, i told him i was thinking about getting some trees, fruit trees. we went to Oakland Nursery tonite and got two peach trees and two apple trees, and came back to plant them. they're already in the ground, and i think in a few weeks i should be able to start making jelly and baking pies. ha ha!

the concrete project

here's three taken when i first moved in, of the back "yard"...when there still was a yard. ha ha! anyway, you can see the concrete parking pad that was formerly behind my house. the other photo is a work-in-progress of me tearing out the concrete [with a mattock], and the other is after i have put topsoil down on it. tonite i will amend the soil with some sand and peat, and tomorrow i will plant the corn. yay!
